Reading Passage
Title: The Curious Life of Chickens
Chickens are some of the most common birds found all over the world. They are domesticated animals, meaning humans have raised them for thousands of years for food, eggs, and sometimes even as pets. Chickens belong to the bird family, but unlike many birds, they cannot fly long distances. In fact, they can only flap their wings enough to jump or glide a short way.
A typical chicken’s day starts early. As soon as the sun rises, they begin to cluck and move around looking for food. Chickens enjoy eating grains, seeds, insects, and small plants. They use their beaks to peck at the ground, and their strong legs help them scratch the earth to find hidden food.
One of the most interesting things about chickens is their social behaviour. Chickens live in groups called flocks, and every flock has a clear social structure. The most dominant bird is often referred to as the “top hen” or the leader of the group. Chickens communicate with each other using over 30 different sounds, each with a unique meaning. For example, a mother hen will make a special sound to call her chicks when she finds food.
Female chickens are called hens, and they lay eggs almost daily, even without a rooster. If a rooster is present, the eggs may be fertilized and develop into chicks. Otherwise, the eggs can be collected and eaten by people. Chickens need a comfortable, safe place called a coop to live, especially at night when they rest.
Today, chickens are kept not only on farms but also in gardens and backyards. Many people enjoy keeping chickens for their fresh eggs and friendly nature. Whether in the countryside or in towns, chickens are truly fascinating animals!
