Reading Passage
In the small town of Willow Creek, where the trees whispered secrets and the rivers sang lullabies, lived a boy named Leo. Leo was fourteen, with tousled chestnut hair and a love for adventure that rivaled even the most daring explorers in books. His heart raced at the thought of discovering hidden treasures and exploring uncharted territories, yet he had one obstacle: his fear of the dark.
One crisp autumn evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, Leo and his best friend Mia climbed to the top of the hill overlooking their town. The view was breathtaking; the patchwork of fields glowed in shades of gold and amber, while the first stars began to twinkle in the twilight sky. Mia turned to Leo, her eyes bright with excitement. “Let’s explore the Old Hollow Cave!” she suggested. It was a place rumored to be filled with ancient drawings and maybe even the bones of prehistoric creatures.
Leo felt a chill run down his spine. The cave was notorious for its darkness, and the thought of stepping into its shadowy depths made his stomach clench. “You know I don’t like the dark, Mia,” he replied, his voice barely above a whisper. “What if there are bats or—”
Mia interrupted him, her enthusiasm unwavering. “But think of the adventure! We could discover something amazing! Besides, I’ll be with you. We’ll bring flashlights, and if it gets too spooky, we can leave. But we can’t let fear stop us from having fun!”
Leo took a deep breath. He admired Mia’s courage and often wished he could be as bold as she was. After a moment of hesitation, he nodded. “Okay, let’s do it.”
They packed their backpacks with snacks, water, and two flashlights, then set off toward the cave. As they approached, the air grew cooler, and the trees around them seemed to stand still, as if holding their breath. The entrance loomed ahead, dark and foreboding, but Leo reminded himself that he wasn’t alone.
Once inside, the cave swallowed them in shadow. The beams of their flashlights danced on the walls, illuminating ancient etchings of animals and strange symbols. “Look at this!” Mia exclaimed, pointing at a drawing of what appeared to be a large, woolly mammoth. Leo’s fear began to melt away, replaced by curiosity.
“Wow, this is incredible!” he said, moving closer to inspect the artwork. The cave felt alive, as if it held the stories of those who had come before them. They wandered deeper, marveling at stalactites hanging like icicles from the ceiling and the cool, damp air that carried the scent of earth.
Suddenly, a fluttering sound echoed through the cave. Leo’s heart raced, and he froze. “What was that?” he whispered, his voice trembling. Mia looked around, her eyes wide with wonder. “Probably just a bat,” she said, her tone light. “They won’t hurt us.”
But Leo could feel the darkness pressing in around him, thick and suffocating. “Maybe we should go back,” he suggested, his voice barely above a whisper. Just as he turned to head back, he heard a soft, melodic sound—like a song coming from the depths of the cave.
“Do you hear that?” Mia asked, her eyes sparkling with excitement. “It’s beautiful!” They followed the sound, and soon they stumbled upon a hidden chamber illuminated by a soft glow. In the center of the chamber was a small pool of water that shimmered like stars.
As they stood in awe, Leo realized something important: he had faced his fear. The darkness that once terrified him had led to this magical moment. With Mia by his side, he had discovered not just the cave, but a part of himself—brave and ready for adventure.
