Reading Passage
The ocean is a vast and mysterious place, covering more than 70% of the Earth's surface. It is home to an incredible variety of life, from the smallest plankton to the largest whales. Scientists estimate that about 230,000 marine species have been identified, but they believe that the actual number could be closer to two million, as many species remain undiscovered. The ocean also plays a crucial role in regulating the Earth's climate, absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen through photosynthesis in marine plants.
Among the various ecosystems in the ocean, coral reefs are one of the most vibrant. Often referred to as the 'rainforests of the sea,' these reefs provide habitat and shelter for numerous marine animals. They are made up of tiny organisms called coral polyps, which build intricate structures over thousands of years. However, coral reefs are facing severe threats from climate change, pollution, and overfishing. Rising sea temperatures can lead to coral bleaching, where the coral loses its color and vital symbiotic algae, resulting in the death of the reef.
Exploring the ocean is not only vital for understanding marine life but also for discovering new resources. The depths of the sea contain minerals and potential medicines that could benefit humanity. However, exploration is challenging due to the extreme conditions, including high pressure and darkness. Submersibles and underwater robots are commonly used to explore these depths, providing valuable data about the ocean's health and its inhabitants. Understanding the ocean is essential, as it affects weather patterns, food supply, and the overall health of our planet.
