Reading Passage
The sun dipped low in the sky, casting long shadows across the forest floor as Amelia made her way through the thick trees. Each step crunched softly on the carpet of leaves, a comforting sound in the otherwise tranquil setting. She had visited the Whispering Woods countless times, but today felt different. A sense of adventure tingled in her fingertips, urging her deeper into the heart of the woods.
As she walked, Amelia’s thoughts drifted to the stories her grandmother used to tell her about the ancient secrets hidden within the forest. According to her grandmother, the Whispering Woods was home to magical creatures and hidden treasures, but very few had ever seen them. “Listen closely, and you might hear them speak,” her grandmother had said with a twinkle in her eye. Amelia had always wanted to hear those whispers.
As the sun sank lower, casting brilliant hues of orange and purple across the sky, Amelia stumbled upon a narrow path she had never noticed before. Vines twisted around the trees, almost as if they were guarding a hidden entryway. Curiosity bubbling inside her, she decided to follow it. The path wound deeper into the woods, and the sounds of rustling leaves and chirping birds faded away, replaced by an eerie stillness.
After what felt like an eternity, Amelia emerged into a small clearing bathed in golden light. In the center stood an enormous oak tree, its gnarled branches stretching wide like welcoming arms. Something glimmered at the base of the tree, catching Amelia’s eye. Kneeling down, she brushed away the fallen leaves to reveal a small wooden box, intricately carved with strange symbols.
Her heart raced as she opened the box, revealing a shimmering stone that sparkled with every color of the rainbow. It pulsed with a gentle warmth, almost as if it had a heartbeat of its own. Amelia picked it up, feeling a rush of energy flow through her. She remembered the tales of the enchanted stones her grandmother spoke of — they were said to grant the holder a single wish. But with such power came great responsibility.
“What do I wish for?” she pondered, looking around at the peaceful clearing. She could wish for anything: to be the best in her class, to have endless summer days, or even to explore the farthest reaches of the world. Yet, in that moment, Amelia thought of something far more important.
“I wish for the Whispering Woods to be protected,” she whispered, holding the stone tightly. “So that others can enjoy its beauty and magic just like I have.”
As soon as the words left her lips, the stone glowed brighter, illuminating the entire clearing. A soft breeze rustled through the trees, and Amelia felt a warmth envelop her, like a gentle hug from the woods themselves. She could hear faint whispers, not just in her ears but in her heart, a chorus of gratitude from the forest.
With a smile, Amelia placed the stone back in the box and closed it gently. She knew she had made the right choice. As she retraced her steps back home, the sun finally dipped below the horizon, leaving the forest bathed in twilight. The woods felt alive around her, filled with wonder and promise, and she realized that she had become part of its story. And maybe, just maybe, the whispers would echo her wish for generations to come.
