Reading Passage

In the small village of Oakwood, nestled between rolling hills and lush gardens, there lived a curious girl named Lily. With her wild curls and bright blue eyes, she was known for her adventurous spirit. Lily loved exploring the woods behind her home, where towering trees whispered ancient secrets and bubbling brooks sang happy tunes. But one sunny afternoon, her adventure would take a most unexpected turn. As she wandered deeper into the woods, she stumbled upon a clearing she had never seen before. In the center of the clearing was a peculiar sight: a large nest made of twigs, leaves, and vibrant moss. But what caught Lily’s attention the most were the eggs nestled inside. They were unlike any eggs she had ever seen. They shimmered in shades of gold, silver, and deep emerald green, sparkling as if they held the essence of the forest itself. Lily’s heart raced with excitement. She had heard stories from her grandmother about magical creatures that laid enchanted eggs, but she never thought she would find one herself! She carefully approached the nest, her fingers itching to touch the beautiful eggs. Suddenly, a soft rustle came from the bushes nearby. Startled, Lily turned to see a small, delicate creature emerging from the underbrush. It was a tiny dragon, its scales glimmering iridescent hues that danced in the sunlight. “Hello!” the dragon chirped, its voice like the tinkling of tiny bells. “I’m Ember. What are you doing here?” Lily’s eyes widened in disbelief. “You can talk! Are you real?” “Of course, I’m real!” Ember replied, puffing out a small cloud of smoke. “But I must protect these eggs. They are very special, and soon they will hatch into beautiful dragonlings. Each one will be unique, just like you!” Lily knelt down, captivated. “Can I help you? I want to learn about dragons!” Ember’s eyes sparkled with delight. “I would love that! But you must promise to keep our secret. Humans and dragons don’t always get along.” With a nod, Lily agreed. From that day forward, she visited the clearing every day, learning about dragons and their magic. Ember taught her how to care for the eggs, telling her tales of how dragons once soared through the skies, weaving through clouds and breathing fire. Lily listened with rapt attention, her imagination soaring as high as the dragons themselves. Weeks passed, and the day finally arrived when the eggs began to crack. Lily was filled with anticipation. The vibrant colors of the eggs shimmered as the little dragonlings slowly emerged, each one more enchanting than the last. There were blues, reds, and even a dragonling with sparkling silver scales that looked just like the stars. As the dragonlings spread their wings, they flapped excitedly, filling the clearing with the sound of laughter and joy. Lily felt a warmth in her heart, knowing she had witnessed something truly magical. Ember turned to her, his eyes bright with gratitude. “Thank you for being my friend, Lily. You helped bring these little ones into the world.” With a smile, Lily knew that this adventure was just the beginning. She had found not only a secret in the woods but a friendship that would last a lifetime. As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the clearing, Lily whispered a promise to the dragons—that she would always protect their secret and cherish the magic they shared.
