Extract from A Midsummer Night's Dream

OBERON: I am invisible, and I will overhear their conference. Enter HELENA and DEMETRIUS. HELENA: O, that my prayers could such affection hold, That I as soon could give my love as seek To make that love known. DEMETRIUS: Noble Helena, you say so, but have you the courage? HELENA: O, that it could be in my nature To be brave enough to speak my heart. [She hesitates, then continues] I do confess I love you, Demetrius, More than my life, more than my own happiness. DEMETRIUS: You are mistaken, Helena. I do not love you, But I will not deny I am caught in this web. OBERON (aside): Now I am sure of their love, and I will use this for my purpose. [He disappears into the shadows] HELENA: Why do I love him so? Though he scorns me, I cannot help myself. DEMETRIUS: Leave her, Helena. Love is blind and deaf. [They exit in different directions]
