Reading Passage: The Fairies’ Realm
Enter, Oberon, Titania, Puck, and other fairies, with their attendants.
OBERON:
I know a bank where the wild thyme blows,
Where oxlips and the nodding violet grows,
Quite over-canopied with luscious woodbine,
With sweet musk-roses and with eglantine.
There sleeps Titania sometime of the night,
Lull'd in these flowers with dances and delight;
And there the snake throws her enamell'd skin,
Weed wide enough to wrap a fairy in.
And with the juice of this I'll streak her eyes,
And make her full of hateful fantasies.
TITANIA:
What angel wakes me from my flowery bed?
OBERON:
I do impeturb her sleep with this charm.
Puck enters, mischievously.
PUCK:
Now, for we fairies that do run
By the triple Hecate's team,
From the presence of the sun,
Following darkness like a dream,
Come, my lord, and see the sights
That make the night so full of mysteries.
FAIRY ATTENDANTS:
Hail, Oberon! Hail, Titania!
Fairies, lovers, and moonbeams,
Dance around till morning's light,
And keep the mystery of night alive.
This extract vividly depicts the enchanting and mysterious realm of the fairies, highlighting their magical environment and playful, sometimes mischievous, nature.
