Fairy Dialogue Extract

OBERON: I know a bank where the wild thyme blows, Where oxlips and the nodding violet grows, Quite over-canopied with luscious woodbine, With sweet musk-roses and with their purple dye, While I with my kids at show, I do offhandly present Some of your favourite fairies to my realm, And tell them of your love, your fairies’ love, And of your sweet and gentle spirit. PUCK: What angel wakes me from my flowery bed? And makes me think I am not free? What strawberry thief dares to steal my bloom? Or what small sprite in fairy guise Doth mock my gentle fairy prize? OBERON: Thou speakest of love, but knowest not How love’s sweet venom bides in every thought. That thou, with thy mischief, dost infect The gentle hearts of mortals and fairies. PUCK: I prithee, Oberon, mark my words, Ere thou dost speak, for in this fairy realm Nothing is as it seems, and all is changed. OBERON: Then let us watch; and, in our silent gaze, Observe the subtle workings of their love, And perhaps correct the errors of their hearts. PUCK: Aye, let us hide in shadows, unseen, And see how lovers’ folly doth commence. (They hide) KING OF FAIRIES: Hark, the changeful moon doth wax and wane, And I, in thy fair power, do rejoice; But heed: mischief lurks in every shadow. FAIRY 1: Come, let us dance, for night is young, And fairy song doth fill the air, While in the woods, love's mistaken hues Create confusion everywhere. FAIRY 2: We must be cautious, lest our mischief Turn to sorrow, and the day reveal The secrets that we thought concealed. OBERON: Now, all is set; observe the play, And let the magic weave its spell.
