Reading Passage
One bright morning in the peaceful village of Willowbrook, a curious little chicken named Licken awoke feeling more adventurous than usual. Licken was not like the other chickens who spent their days pecking at the ground and scratching for grains. No, Licken loved to explore the world beyond the farmyard and imagine magical adventures. Today, he decided, he would go beyond the fence and see what lay outside their familiar fields.
As Licken trotted toward the gate, he noticed a strange, shiny object lying on the ground. It was a small, golden acorn that sparkled in the sunlight. Curious as ever, Licken pecked at it gently. Suddenly, the acorn glowed brighter, and a soft voice echoed in the air. "Greetings, Licken," it said. "You have found the enchanted acorn of the Forest of Fantasia. It grants the bearer one wish."
Licken’s eyes widened with excitement. He had heard stories of the Forest of Fantasia, a magical place where animals talked, trees whispered secrets, and adventures awaited at every turn. Without hesitation, Licken thought about his wish. He wanted to be brave enough to explore the whole world, not just his small corner of the farm.
"I wish I could see the entire world and have wonderful adventures," he clucked confidently.
The acorn shimmered even more brightly, and suddenly, Licken felt a strange tingling in his wings. When the glow faded, he found himself in a land unlike anything he had ever seen. The sky was a swirl of rainbow colors, and trees floated in the air, their leaves shimmering like crystal. Flowers sang softly as they swayed, and tiny creatures with wings buzzed around like living fireflies.
Licken was amazed. He flapped his wings excitedly, eager to explore. As he wandered through this wondrous land, he met a wise old owl named Oliver. Oliver had shimmering feathers and a deep, gentle voice. "Welcome to Fantasia, young Licken," Oliver hooted. "Here, animals can talk, and magic is everywhere. But remember, every adventure has its lessons."
Licken nodded eagerly. Soon, he found himself in a clearing where a group of animals was trying to solve a problem. A tiny squirrel named Squeaky had accidentally knocked over a bucket of glowing water, causing a small explosion of sparkling bubbles. The bubbles floated up, filling the air with shimmering colors, but they also threatened to block the path of a group of frightened rabbits trying to find shelter.
Licken quickly thought about what he could do. Using his newfound courage, he approached Squeaky and offered to help. Together, they carefully cleaned up the mess, and Licken suggested they work together to find a safe place for everyone. The animals cheered, grateful for Licken’s bravery and kindness.
As the sun began to set in Fantasia, Licken realized it was time to return home. Oliver the owl nodded wisely. "Your wish has brought you here, and now you see that courage and kindness can overcome any challenge," he said. With a wave of his wing, Oliver guided Licken back to the enchanted acorn.
In a flash, Licken found himself back in the farmyard, the golden acorn still glowing softly at his feet. He looked around at his familiar surroundings, feeling different inside. He had learned that adventures were not just about exploring distant lands but also about being brave and helping others whenever you could.
From that day on, Licken still loved to dream about Fantasia, but he also knew that the greatest magic was inside him—the magic of kindness, courage, and curiosity. And he was ready for whatever new adventures awaited, whether in his own backyard or beyond the fence.
