Understanding Commas in Parenthesis
Many students, including those in Grade 8, find the rules of punctuation, especially commas used with parenthesis, quite challenging. Proper use of commas ensures clarity and readability in writing. Parentheses, or parenthetical statements, add extra information to a sentence but are often set off by commas when the information is non-essential. For example, in the sentence, 'My brother, who lives in New York, is visiting us next week,' the phrase 'who lives in New York' is set off by commas to indicate that it is additional information.
