Mrs. Anderson had always been careful to keep the gate closed, but today she had forgotten. When she saw Lucy strutting among the tomato plants, she chuckled softly.
"Well, look at you, little explorer," Mrs. Anderson said, gently shooing Lucy back toward the coop.
But Lucy was not ready to go. She hopped onto a pile of hay near the carrots and clucked loudly, as if telling everyone she had found something exciting. Mrs. Anderson noticed that Lucy was pecking at a shiny object partially hidden beneath the leaves. Curious, she reached down and uncovered a small, rusted key.
The key was old and covered in dirt, but it looked special. Mrs. Anderson wondered what it could unlock. She looked around her garden and then at the old shed at the far end of the yard. Maybe it was for a treasure chest or a secret door she’d forgotten about.
