Reading Passage
Lila had always been fascinated by stories of faraway places and mysterious adventures. Growing up in the small town of Maplebrook, she often found herself lost in books about explorers, pirates, and hidden treasures. Her favorite spot was the old attic in her house, where she kept a collection of maps, journals, and old treasures she had found during her childhood explorations in her backyard. But Lila yearned for her own adventure—something beyond the pages of her books.
One rainy Saturday afternoon, while rummaging through her attic, Lila discovered a dusty, leather-bound chest she had never seen before. Curious, she cleared away some cobwebs and lifted the heavy lid. Inside, she found a strange, shimmering stone nestled among yellowed papers and faded photographs. The stone was smooth, about the size of a fist, and it glowed faintly with a bluish light. Alongside it was a worn journal with a leather strap and a note written in elegant script: "To whoever finds this, trust your heart and follow the path."
Lila’s eyes widened with excitement. She opened the journal and read the first entry: "This stone is the Heart of the Forest. It’s a key to a secret world hidden within the woods beyond Maplebrook." The journal described a mysterious entrance concealed by ancient trees and a series of clues that would lead to a hidden treasure. Lila’s pulse quickened. She had always believed that her town held secrets, and now she had proof.
The next day, armed with her backpack, the journal, and the glowing stone, Lila set out into the woods. She remembered the clues from the journal, which mentioned a fallen oak with a hollow trunk and a crooked stone that looked like a face. As she wandered among the trees, she soon spotted the fallen oak, its massive branches lying on the ground like a giant’s arms. Inside the hollow trunk, she found a small, carved wooden box that contained a tiny, silver key.
Following the journal’s instructions, she looked for the crooked stone. After a short search, she found one that resembled a face—a large bock with deep crevices that looked like eyes and a mouth. She placed the silver key into a tiny hidden lock near the base of the stone and turned it. Suddenly, the ground trembled slightly, and a section of earth beside her shifted, revealing a narrow tunnel leading underground.
Lila hesitated for a moment, then crawled into the tunnel. It was dark and damp, but the glow from her stone illuminated the way. She followed the twisting passage until it opened into a vast underground chamber. At its center stood a pedestal holding a shimmering, golden chest. Heart pounding, Lila approached and opened the chest carefully.
Inside, she found a collection of glittering jewels, ancient coins, and a small, delicate crown. But most importantly, she discovered a note that read: "The true treasure is the courage to explore and the belief in your own adventures." Lila smiled, realizing that her journey had just begun. She carefully took the crown and the journal, knowing that she held the key to more mysteries and adventures waiting beyond the edges of her small town.
As she made her way back through the tunnel and out into the daylight, Lila felt a new sense of confidence. She knew that the world was full of secrets just waiting to be uncovered, and she was ready to discover them all. Her adventure had shown her that sometimes, the greatest treasures are not gold or jewels but the courage and curiosity to seek what lies hidden just beyond the familiar. From that day on, she looked at Maplebrook with new eyes—ready to find the magic that existed in every corner of her world.
