Reading Passage

Last summer, I had the incredible opportunity to visit the Grand Canyon for the first time. It was a trip I had been dreaming about for years, and finally, I was able to make it happen with my family. We left early in the morning, eager to start our adventure. The drive from our hometown took about six hours, but the scenic views along the way made the time pass quickly. As we approached the canyon, the landscape changed dramatically. The lush green forests gradually gave way to vast, rocky cliffs and deep valleys that stretched as far as the eye could see. When we arrived at the canyon’s edge, I was overwhelmed by the sheer size and beauty of the place. The colors of the rocks ranged from deep reds and browns to vibrant oranges and purples. The sunlight made the cliffs shimmer and glow, creating a breathtaking scene. We spent the first hour just standing there, staring down into the enormous chasm that seemed to go on forever. The air was crisp, and I could hear the distant call of birds soaring high above. Our family had planned several activities for the trip, but the highlight was hiking along the rim and exploring some of the trails that led down into the canyon. We chose a trail called Bright Angel, which is known for its scenic views and relatively gentle incline. As we hiked down the steep path, I realized how much effort it took to descend into the canyon. The trail was lined with switchbacks, and I had to be careful to watch my step. Along the way, we stopped at several lookout points to take pictures and enjoy the view from different angles. One of the most memorable moments was reaching the Plateau Point, about halfway down the trail. From there, we had a perfect view of the Colorado River winding through the bottom of the canyon. It looked tiny from our vantage point, but I knew it was a powerful force shaping this incredible landscape over millions of years. We took a break to rest and have a snack, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. Looking out over the vastness below made me feel both humbled and inspired. After returning to the rim, we decided to take a helicopter tour that offered a different perspective of the canyon. The helicopter hovered just above the edges of the cliffs, giving us a bird's-eye view of the intricate layers of rock and the winding river below. It was an exhilarating experience that I will never forget. From above, the canyon looked even more immense and complex. That trip to the Grand Canyon taught me a lot about nature's power and beauty. It made me realize how important it is to protect these natural wonders for future generations. As we drove back home, I felt grateful for the memories we had created and the lessons I had learned. Visiting the Grand Canyon was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and I hope to return someday to explore even more of this amazing place.
