Analysis of 'Bayonet Charge' by Ted Hughes
Suddenly, he awoke and was running—raw in raw-seamed hot khaki, his sweat heavy, and the air a threat. He plunged past scrutiny into the green hedge that had been a hedge, but now was a thicket, then a forest. The shot-slashed furrows of the ploughed-up ground, the bloodied sky, the rifle’s bayonet point – everything was a blur of chaos. His sweat was cold, and his heart pounded. He thought of the distant war, of duty, of fear but also of survival. He wondered why he was there, in the middle of a battlefield, caught between life and death, feeling the weight of his weapon and the noise of the chaos around him. As he moved forward, he became aware of the sound of his own breathing, loud and uncontrollable, blending into the rumble of distant artillery. His mind was a jumble of images—death, escape, heroism—yet he was just a boy, caught in the wake of history, fighting to stay alive.
