Reading Passage: 'Bayonet Charge' by Ted Hughes

Suddenly he awoke and was running – raw in raw-seamed hot khaki, his sweat heavy, and the stinking of his own breath—He lugged a rifle numb as a smashed arm. The patriotic tear that had brimmed in his eye, sweating like molten iron, now froze, as he crouched, stiff and frozen in the mud. The war’s chaos raged around him—confusion, fear, the clash of swords and shields echoing through mythic battlegrounds—his mind replayed visions of divine battles, of gods and monsters fighting across time. His body trembled, caught between duty and instinct, as he plunged into the chaos, a hero on a mortal quest, echoing ancient mythic warriors of legend. Amidst the noise and violence, he felt himself a part of a greater myth—a hero in the age of gods and monsters, fighting to survive.
