Analysis and Annotation of 'Follower'

My father worked with a horse-plough, / His shoulders globed like a full sail strung between the shafts, / And at the head of the dazed and canny wry-shinned. / An expert: the horse that came to me / Pulled at the heavy harness, the flickering, / The sweating, and the grunting. / He would set out, early in the morning, / With a single plough, to turn the dark of the earth. / I wanted to grow up and plough, / To drive the course, and farm the land / Like my father did, with a steady hand, / But I was the one who followed him, / The horse-shoeing, the farm-hand's work, / The echoes of his voice, the weight of the day. / I was born into the shadow of his strength, / Still, I longed to be the one in charge, / To lead the plough and carve new furrows. / But I am only the shadow, the follower, / Always behind, watching, waiting, / To take my turn at the plough, / To learn the craft of the land, / To feel the weight of responsibility, / As he did, before me.
