Examining 'Mother Any Distance'
`Mother Any Distance` by Simon Armitage
Sliding back and forth in the line of life, I reach for the tape measure,
Pulling it out, unspooling in the air, the strap of my father’s hand
Still holding, as I extend the length between us. The line is taut,
A measured boundary, boundaries that stretch with every step I take.
‘You come to try the distance,’ he says, his voice firm but gentle,
‘And I’ll be the tape, marking where you go, how far you can reach.’
Each crack of the tape, each extension, echoes like a hesitation,
As I test the limits of my own world, tethered but eager for more.
The line, a symbol of connection and independence, stretches thin but remains,
Reminding me that growth is measured, and distance is both a challenge and a gift.
In this space, I learn to balance the pull between reliance and independence,
Knowing that each step away is also a step closer to understanding myself.`
