Analysis and Annotation of 'Neutral Tones'

We stood by a pond that winter day, And the sun was white, as though chidden of God, And a few leaves lay on the starving, glassy water, Black with some implications of decay. They had fallen from an ash, and were grey With dead leaves, and had no reason to dance, But they moved down, or I moved them: they knew no reason They simply moved, and they moved again, and again. And the sunlight was white, and the leaves on the water, With their dead, grey, dripping, and their broken branches Caught in the stillness of the pond, Like memories that refuse to fade. I listened to the silence, broken only by the soft ripple, The water's gentle lap, the distant bird's cry, And I thought how love can turn to silence, How memories can become cold, how wounds can heal, But leave behind a ghostly trace, a shadow, A colourless echo of what once was bright. The way the day grew colder, the sky dull grey, Reminding us that even the brightest moments fade, And in the end, all that remains is a faint reflection, A neutral tone in the vast, indifferent landscape of time.
