Excerpts from 'Remains'

It is the same seven days a week. It is what we do, to put on us armour, to face the day. But in the back of my mind, I see every round as it rips through his life, and the drinks and the drugs and the endless scenes of slaughter. He’s just a kid, and I can’t forget, but I try to compartmentalise, push it to the back, make it less real. I see him in my dreams, the flash of that gun, the blood pooling on the ground. Sometimes, I swear, I hear his voice, calling out, but I can’t tell if it’s real or just my mind playing tricks. The guilt gnaws at me, and I wonder if I’ll ever be free from this nightmare, or if I’m destined to carry this burden forever.
