Sonnet 29: Analysis and Annotation

When, in disgrace with fortune and men's eyes, I all alone beweep my outcast state, And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries, And look upon myself and curse my fate, Wishing me like to one more rich in hope, Feathered my sweet thoughts with hope and might, To sit and rest where fortune's sun doth shine, Uncertain of my destiny's dark night. As, at the very first, I draw my breath, And feel the passions of my soul ignite, My hopes arise; my heart begins to swell, My spirit soars beyond the earthly sight. Yet, as the storm of grief begins to quell, My spirits lift; my soul is set alight. For in my mind, I find a quiet friend, Who whispers hope and love that never end.
