Three summers since I chose a maid,
Too young maybe — but more to do
At harvest-time than bide and woo,
When us was wed at last and I,
And all the time I feared you'd fly,
And when I dared to ask you why,
You only stared and cast your eyes
Like a shadow on the door.
I chose a maid,
I chose a maid
Because she was fresh and fair,
And I thought she’d love me not despair,
But she was wild and shy, not tame,
She ran away and caused me pain,
I longed to hold her, call her name,
In fields of gold and meadows fair,
Yet she would hide behind a scare,
And I was left alone once more.
