Analysis & Annotation: The Prelude
Untitled Worksheet
Extract from 'The Prelude' by William Wordsworth
It was a beauteous evening, calm and free, The holy time is quiet as a Nun Breathless with adoration; the broad sun Is sinking down in its tranquillity; The gentleness of heaven is on the sea; Listen! the mighty being is awake, And doth with his eternal motion make A sound like thunder—Everlasting universe, And God!—It moves upon the earth, From where it rises in the east, To where it sets in the west, The silent, everlasting, deep; The soul’s majestic sleep.
The stars have begun to peep, The moon is rising; and her rays Have reached the ocean’s farthest bays, And the horizon’s line; The night is cool and still; the trees Are whispering in the breeze, And all around is peaceful, divine, A tranquil moment free from pain, And in the darkness, life’s refrain.
