Extract and Analysis of Carol Ann Duffy's Poem
Not Waving but Drowning by Carol Ann Duffy
Nobody heard him, the dead man,
Who had been drowning quietly in the depths of his despair,
No one saw him go under, no one heard the silent plea.
He tried to tell them, but his words were muted,
Lost in the rush of life's unyielding tide,
A cry for help he could not express,
A shadow cast by his own silent depths.
The waves crashed around him, indifferent to his call,
His life ebbing away in the darkness of his mind,
A figure lost beneath the surface,
Waving, but no one saw, no one understood.
Now he lies beneath the silent earth,
His voice a faint whisper in the wind,
A reminder that sometimes, words remain unspoken,
And drowning is silent, even when we shout.
