Reading Passage
Dear Diary,
Today was one of the most unusual days I’ve ever experienced, and I feel like I need to write everything down before I forget. It all started when I found an old, dusty box in the attic while helping my parents clean out the house. Inside, I discovered a strange, worn-out leather-bound book with no title on the cover. Curious, I opened it and found that it was a diary—an old one, filled with strange handwriting and even stranger entries.
The first page seemed normal enough, describing someone’s daily life, but as I turned the pages, things started to get weird. The entries spoke about a mysterious figure called "the Lord of the Things." The writer described him as a powerful being who could control objects and possessions, turning everyday items into something extraordinary or terrifying. The diary’s author seemed both fascinated and terrified of this lord, often writing about sightings of strange objects that appeared or disappeared at his command.
As I read further, I learned that the Lord of the Things was not a person but a spirit or a force that lived in the shadows of the world of objects. According to the diary, he was once a simple collector of things but grew jealous and angry when humans took their possessions for granted. Over time, he gained the ability to influence objects, making them do his bidding. The diary warned that if you ever felt a sudden change in your belongings—like a toy that moves by itself or a book that falls off the shelf—you might have encountered the Lord of the Things.
What really caught my attention was a story about a boy named Ethan, who had found a strange, old coin in his backyard. The coin was shiny and engraved with strange symbols. Ethan kept it in his pocket, feeling a strange warmth whenever he touched it. That night, Ethan’s toys started moving on their own, and objects around his house seemed to have a life of their own. At first, Ethan was scared, but then he realized that the coin was the source of the strange happenings. The diary warned that such objects could be harmless or dangerous, depending on the Lord of the Things’s mood.
As I read, I started to wonder if the stories were real or just old tales. But then I looked around my room and noticed that my favorite toy robot was sitting on the desk, its eyes flickering strangely. I reached out to turn it off, but it suddenly moved its arm as if to wave at me. My heart pounded. Was this the work of the Lord of the Things? Or just a coincidence? I wasn’t sure, but I decided to keep the diary safe and see what else might happen.
Now, I’m a little scared but also fascinated. The diary ended abruptly, with a warning that the Lord of the Things still lurks in the shadows, waiting for someone to forget the value of the objects around them. It said that if we ever start taking things for granted, we might invite him into our lives. I don’t know if I believe all of it, but I definitely feel a strange presence in my room tonight. Maybe I’ll just keep the diary hidden—for now.
Tomorrow, I’ll try to find out more about this mysterious lord. Maybe there’s a way to protect ourselves from his influence. Or maybe I should just forget about it and go to sleep. But something tells me that I’ll never forget what I read today.
Goodnight, Diary.
