Keats' Poetry: Analysis and Annotation

My heart aches, and a drowsy numbness pains My sense, as though of hemlock I had drunk, Or emptied some dull opiate to the drains One minute past, and Lethe-wards had sunk: 'Tis not through envy of thy happy lot, But being too happy in thine happiness,— Dazed with the drowsy numbness of my brain, Drifting, away, by the soft wind's gentle sighs, Into the realm of dreams, where sleep’s eternal reign lies, And visions fade like shadows in the dawn’s first light. O, for a draught of vintage! that hath been Cool'd a long age in the deep-delved earth, Tasting of the flora, and the country green, Dance, and the sunbeams, and the old sweet cheer, But, oh, the ache within my breast persists, Prisoned in a world of sorrow and despair, Though I am haunted by these shadowed trysts, My soul longs for peace beyond compare.
