Shelley's Poetry Extract and Analysis

Hail to thee, blithe Spirit! Bird or beast or human: The same that has no flesh and blood Thy slender wings, thy called voice, Are the utterance of the soul, A clime of uncreated light, Whose memory is its own pure love, And without the aid of human tongue Can utter thoughts that pierce the skies. Thou art unseen, but thy divine power Hath made the fields and the woods to sing, And by thy breath beneath the stars The universe is quickened. O, lift me as a wave, a leaf, a cloud! I fall upon the thorns of life! I bleed! I faint! I perish! Let me not sink! but keep me from the clinging vain! Let me be like a cloud on the blue sky, A wave on the silent deep, a star in the distant heaven. And, as I rise, I hear thy voice, Whispering words of hope and fire, That lift my spirit into realms of truth, Where mortal bounds expire.
