Section 1: Extract from Wordsworth’s 'Lines Composed a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey'

Five years have past; five summers, with the flow Of crystal rivers; and, at times, my mind Shall meet their images, and their pleasing shapes Revisit me. Thoughts of more deep seclusion; and Powerful feelings, of which I may not speak, Are summoned up—how oft, in spirit, I have turned To that quiet solitude of nature’s own realm, Where solitude and peace, and living harmony, Flow through the landscape — hills, waters, and the trees, And all that I have loved and known, since childhood. O sylvan Wye! thou wanderer through my memory, How often have I stood beneath thy shade, And felt the influence of thy gentle stream, While hours of happiness have filled my soul, And inspired my thoughts to bind in verse The beauty of thy banks, thy silent hills, Thy quiet nooks, and all the natural grace That breathes from thee. Oh, could I but retain That sweet serenity, that gentle strength, And keep it ever in my mind’s deep core, To guide me through the turbulent storms of life.
