Reading Passage
Lena had always been curious about the old forest behind her grandmother’s house. As a child, she had often heard stories of how the woods were enchanted, filled with mysterious creatures and hidden treasures. But as she grew older, Lena's curiosity waned, replaced by the busyness of school and friends. Still, whenever she visited her grandmother during summer breaks, she couldn’t resist sneaking off to explore the edge of the woods, pretending she was an adventurer on a grand quest.
One bright morning, when the sun painted the sky with shades of pink and orange, Lena decided to venture deeper into the forest than ever before. She packed a small bag with water, a notebook, and her favorite magnifying glass. Her grandmother warned her to be careful and to stay close, but Lena’s excitement pushed her forward. She stepped carefully over fallen branches and crouched to examine strange-shaped leaves and tiny insects crawling on the forest floor.
As she wandered deeper, Lena noticed the trees growing taller and closer together, their leaves forming a thick canopy that filtered the sunlight into shimmering patterns on the ground. Suddenly, she stumbled upon a faint path covered with moss and small pebbles. Curious, she followed it, wondering where it might lead. The path twisted and turned, winding through thick bushes and around giant roots that looked like the arms of ancient giants.
After a while, Lena arrived at a small clearing. In the center was a pond with crystal-clear water, reflecting the sky like a mirror. On the opposite side of the pond, she saw something unusual—an object half-buried in the mud. Carefully, Lena stepped closer and discovered it was an old, rusty box. Her heart pounding with excitement, she gently cleared away the dirt and leaves covering it. The box was covered in strange carvings, symbols that seemed to glow faintly in the sunlight.
With trembling hands, Lena managed to open the box. Inside, she found a collection of old coins, a small, worn diary, and a delicate necklace with a pendant shaped like a star. Her eyes widened in awe. The diary appeared to be very old, and as she flipped through its pages, she found handwritten entries describing adventures, hidden places, and encounters with mysterious creatures. One entry caught her eye: it spoke of a secret door in the forest that only a true explorer could find.
Lena spent the rest of the day sitting by the pond, reading the diary and examining her newfound treasures. She wondered if the stories were real or just the imagination of someone who loved the woods as much as she did. When the sun started to dip below the trees, casting long shadows across the forest floor, Lena knew it was time to head back. She carefully tucked the diary, coins, and necklace into her bag, promising herself she would return soon to uncover more secrets.
As she made her way home, Lena felt a new sense of wonder and adventure. That day, she had discovered that the forest held more than just tall trees and quiet streams — it held stories of the past, waiting patiently for someone brave enough to listen. From then on, Lena’s visits to the woods became less about exploring and more about uncovering the mysteries that had been hidden for generations, forever changing the way she saw the world around her.
