I had always loved fairy tales and stories about magical creatures, but I never believed I would encounter one in my own backyard. The woman explained that Tinker’s job was to protect the forest and its secrets, and that he was special because he trusted me. She told me stories of other children who had met magical beings and how those encounters had changed their lives forever. The woman waved her hand, and suddenly, Tinker looked up at me one last time with a gentle, knowing gaze. Then he disappeared in a shimmer of light, as if he had been a dream.
