Rules for Punctuation with Speech
When writing direct speech, quotation marks are used to enclose the exact words spoken by someone. If the sentence continues after the quote, punctuation such as commas, periods, question marks, or exclamation points go inside the quotation marks. For example: She asked, "Are you coming to the party?" When a quote ends a sentence, a period is used before the closing quotation mark.
