Rules for Using Speech Marks

When writing direct speech, always enclose the spoken words within quotation marks. Begin the quote with a capital letter. Punctuation marks such as commas, periods, question marks, and exclamation points are placed inside the quotation marks when they belong to the quoted material. If the sentence continues after the speech, use a comma after the speech if needed, and continue with the rest of the sentence.
