Reading Passage
The Hidden Treasure of Maple Grove
Everyone in Maple Grove knew about the old abandoned house at the edge of town. It was a crumbling structure that had been empty for decades, and stories about it had been passed down through generations. Some said it was haunted, while others believed it held secret treasures left behind by the original owner, Mr. Harold Finch.
One summer afternoon, a curious boy named Liam decided to explore the house. He had always been fascinated by the stories and wanted to see if there was any truth to them. Equipped with a flashlight and a backpack, Liam approached the creaking front door. It was slightly ajar, as if inviting him inside.
Inside, the house was dark and dusty. As Liam moved through the rooms, he noticed old furniture covered in sheets, broken windows letting in streaks of sunlight, and the faint smell of mold. Despite the eerie atmosphere, Liam’s curiosity grew stronger. In the corner of the living room, he spotted a small wooden box hidden beneath a pile of debris.
Carefully, he opened the box and found a collection of old coins, a faded map, and a leather-bound journal. The journal belonged to Mr. Finch himself. As Liam read through the pages, he learned about Mr. Finch’s life, his love for adventure, and his secret search for hidden treasures around Maple Grove.
According to the journal, Mr. Finch had buried a small chest filled with jewelry and gold coins somewhere in the backyard of the house. The map he left behind marked a spot near a large oak tree, which was still standing today.
Liam decided to follow the map. He went outside and looked around, searching for the oak tree. After a few minutes, he found it—a massive tree with thick branches and deep roots. Carefully, Liam started digging near the base of the tree. After about an hour of digging, his shovel hit something hard.
Excited, Liam cleared away the dirt and uncovered a small, rusty chest. Inside, he found shiny gold coins, sparkling jewelry, and a note from Mr. Finch that read, “To the brave explorer who finds this, may your adventures be as exciting as mine.”
Liam felt proud and happy. He knew he had discovered a real treasure, but more than that, he had uncovered a piece of history about his town and its mysterious past. From that day on, Liam became even more curious about Maple Grove and its stories, eager to discover what other secrets might be hidden in his small town.
