Reading Passage: 'Bayonet Charge' by Ted Hughes

Suddenly he awoke and was running – raw in raw material. He plunged in the green, he shambled in the yellow, his terror's touchy dynamite. In raw despair he fought for breath, and then, with a sudden leap, he fell forward, overwhelmed by the noise and chaos of war's relentless fury, his mind a blur of images and commands. The soldier, caught in the tumult, felt the earth's tremor beneath him as he charged forward into the unknown, his heart pounding in his chest like a war drum. The horizon shimmered with the heat of distant explosions, while above, the sky seemed to crack open with the thunder of artillery. His mind scrambled to grasp the reason for this violence, but all that remained was a desperate instinct to survive amidst the chaos.
