Suddenly he awoke and was running – raw in rawboned heat, hot metal, hot copper, hot steel, hot khaki, his sweat heavy and blinding. He lugged a rifle numb as a smashed arm, and the patriotic tear that had brimmed in his eye, cooled to a wild, desperate stare. The blast of the gunfire echoed in his ears, and the earth seemed to shudder beneath him. He stumbled forward, his senses overloaded, the landscape blurring into an indistinct mass of mud and fire. Each step felt like a battle, each breath like a gulp of bitter air. His mind raced, caught between fear and fury, as the world around him dissolved into chaos.
