Reading Extract from 'Poppies'
I pinned one onto my lapel, slipped a photo into my pocket, burned a little candle, and kept a fragment of my son’s shirt. I resisted the urge to run my fingers through the gelled black hair of the boy in the photo. I wanted to be brave, but my mind was flooded with memories. I found the words I wanted to say, but they wouldn’t come. Instead, I traced the pattern of the red poppies on the fabric, trying to hold onto the past. The smell of the flowers lingered as I went to the local shop, where I bought a small bunch of dried poppies. As I gazed at them, I couldn’t help but think of the war and the loss I felt. On the day he left, I kissed him goodbye, knowing it might be forever. Now, I see the poppies in the garden and remember him in every petal, every colour flickering in the wind. The silence is heavy, full of unspoken words and memories that won’t fade. I wear the poppies on my coat, a symbol of my love and loss. Sometimes, I whisper his name to the wind, hoping he can hear me from wherever he is.
