Analysis of 'Poppies' by Jane Weir

I pinned one end of the yellow string to the top of his head, and then I ran my finger through the gelled blackthorns of his hair, and I tried to remember how he’d looked before he went away. And I wanted to graze my nose across the tip of his nose, play at being a child again, and I resisted the impulse to run my fingers through the gelled blackthorns of his hair. I remembered him as a boy, and I remembered how he had looked in his uniform, how he had looked in the morning of his deployment, how he had looked when he was leaving, and I tried to hold onto those memories. I listened, hoping to hear his voice, to hear him say he was coming back, but all I could hear was the distant echo of a train, a whistle, and the quiet sobs of my own heart. I closed my eyes and imagined him at home, safe and warm, waiting for me to come back, to hold him close, and tell him everything was going to be alright. But I knew that was just a dream, a fleeting hope, because I was left with only the image of a scarlet poppy in the wind, a symbol of remembrance, of sacrifice, and of the enduring pain of war.
