Reading Passage

On another occasion, we get sent out to tackle looters raiding a bank, to branch, to break, to run, to cut short when the long grass shifts. I see every round as it rips through his life, I see broad daylight on the other side. His bloody life in my bloody hands. He’s there on the ground, sort of inside out, his guts burst open. His blood-shadow stays on the street, and his girlfriend’s waiting, watching us, trying not to scream. Then I blink, and he’s carted off in the back of a van. The image of his face, the blood, the smell, all stay with me. I try to tell myself it’s OK, that it’s just part of the job, but it’s not.
