Exploring 'Remains' by Simon Armitage
On another occasion, we get sent out to tackle looters raiding a bank, during a war. Running my fingers through his hair, I bang on the door again, and this time he’s there, still. I curse myself for my hesitation—my moment of doubt. When I finally do peer into his eyes, I see the ghost of a young soldier, haunted and exhausted. The smell of the blood, the heat of the gunshot wound, and the chaos of the battlefield linger in his face. His hands tremble as he tries to speak, but the words are lost amidst the noise and the memories. I ask myself, what makes a man shoot another? What does it mean to carry such guilt? The memory of that night is still fresh, like a wound that refuses to heal. Each night, I see his face in my dreams, and I wonder if I will ever escape the ghosts of war.
