A
Extract from 'Remains' by Simon Armitage
On another occasion, we get sent out
to tackle looters raiding a bank,
set in a turreted city, or a field,
where the dead man stands, his jaw set.
We move on, and I see him, almost.
My stomach churns, and I see every round of his gaping jaw,
his blood-shadow stays on the street,
and, of course, I blink,
and he bursts through the doors of the bank,
the image of agony.
He's there again, in my mind, at night,
reading the last letter he wrote,
his face twisted in the same agony,
while I see him, again, and again, in that same familiar pose.
His body, his face, etched into my memory,
reminding me of what I saw, what I did, and what I cannot forget.
