Source Analysis: Casualties at the Battle of the Somme

Source A: Report on Casualties from the Battle of the Somme

"The Battle of the Somme resulted in staggering casualties. Over one million men were wounded, killed, or missing, making it one of the bloodiest battles in history. The British suffered approximately 420,000 casualties, the French around 200,000, and the Germans approximately 500,000. The scale of loss was unprecedented, with many soldiers dying in just a few months of fighting. The terrain and tactics used contributed heavily to the high number of casualties, and the emotional toll on soldiers was immense. Despite the heavy losses, the battle was seen by military leaders as necessary to weaken the enemy and break the stalemate of trench warfare.

Provenance: Official military report, 1916, published by the British War Office.
