Understanding the Three Estates
Source A: Extract from a French historian's description of the Estates
'French society before 1789 was divided into three distinct groups or Estates. The First Estate consisted of the clergy, who held significant privileges, including exemption from many taxes. The Second Estate was made up of the nobility, who also enjoyed numerous privileges and owned a large portion of land.
