Source Analysis: The Global Impact of the Great Depression

Source A: Economic Hardship in Europe and America during the Great Depression

"The economic downturn that began in 1929 did not spare any continent. In the United States, unemployment rose sharply, factories shut down, and banks failed, leading to widespread poverty. Similarly, in countries across Europe, the economic crisis caused mass unemployment, homelessness, and social unrest. Governments struggled to respond, and many people lost faith in their financial systems. The depression also affected Latin America and Asia, where exports declined, and economies contracted, worsening poverty and inequality. The global nature of the downturn showed how interconnected the world's economies had become, and how a crisis in one region could quickly spread worldwide." Provenance: Report by the International Economic Committee, 1932, official government report
