Queen, Government and Religion: The Religious Settlement
Untitled Worksheet
Source Analysis: The Religious Settlement
Source A: Queen Elizabeth I's Speech on the Religious Settlement
"We do earnestly desire that all our subjects, of what religion soever they be, may live peaceably and happily, and that none be troubled or disturbed in their conscience. Yet, we hold it necessary to establish a uniformity in religion, so that we may serve God with one mind and one heart. It is our will and pleasure that the Book of Common Prayer be used in all churches, and that the clergy teach according to it. We command that the laws establishing the Protestant faith be upheld, and that all who dissent be dealt with according to law. Our aim is not to oppress any conscience but to maintain the unity of our realm in faith."* Provenance: Queen Elizabeth I, 1559, Royal Proclamation
