Source Analysis: Lexington & Concord

Source A: A Patriot's Account of the Battles

"On the morning of April 19, 1775, the British troops marched towards Lexington and Concord, expecting to seize colonial weapons and arrest rebel leaders. As they advanced, colonial militia waited in the villages, ready to defend their homes and rights. Shots rang out at Lexington, where a small group of minutemen confronted the British. The fighting quickly spread, and by the end of the day, many colonists and soldiers were dead or wounded. The colonists saw this as a fight for freedom and their rights, while the British considered it a necessary action to restore order. The battles marked the start of a long struggle for independence." Provenance: Samuel Adams, 1775, report published in colonial newspapers.
