Ghettos during the Holocaust
Untitled Worksheet
Analysis of the Ghettos in Nazi-Occupied Europe
Source A: Life in the Warsaw Ghetto
"The conditions in the Warsaw Ghetto were unimaginable. Over 400,000 Jews were crammed into a small area, with little food, rampant disease, and constant fear. Families were forced to live in overcrowded, unsanitary conditions, often with no access to proper medical care. The Germans implemented strict curfews and enforced brutal searches, making daily life a constant struggle for survival. Many residents resorted to hiding food and risking punishment just to stay alive. Despite the suffering, some residents organized underground schools and cultural activities to maintain hope and identity under Nazi oppression. The ghetto became a symbol of Jewish resistance and suffering during this dark period of history.
Provenance: An eyewitness account written by Miriam Weiss, 1942, diary entry.
