Introduction to the Emancipation Proclamation

The Emancipation Proclamation was an executive order issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863. It declared the freedom of all enslaved people in Confederate states that were in rebellion against the Union. The Proclamation transformed the Civil War into a fight against slavery and aimed to weaken the Confederacy by depriving it of its labor force.
