Conditions in Trench Warfare: Source Analysis
Untitled Worksheet
Source Analysis: Conditions in the Trenches
Source A: Desperate Conditions in the Trenches
"The trenches were a muddy maze, filled with rats and filth. Soldiers suffered from cold, hunger, and constant fear. The stench was overwhelming, and disease spread rapidly among the men. We lived in constant discomfort, with little rest or relief. The nights were the worst; the darkness and the sounds of rats and rats made sleep impossible. Sometimes, a shell would explode nearby, shaking the ground and making us fear for our lives. Despite all this, we had to keep fighting, knowing that escape was impossible." Provenance: Private letter written by Private John Taylor, 1916, personal correspondence.
