Analysis of Weapons in Trench Warfare
Source A: Description of New Weapons Used in WWI
"The introduction of new weapons such as machine guns, poison gases, and tanks revolutionized trench warfare. Machine guns could fire hundreds of rounds per minute, making it nearly impossible for soldiers to cross open ground without suffering heavy casualties. Poison gases, like chlorine and mustard gas, caused agonizing injuries and deaths, forcing soldiers to wear gas masks and retreat to protected dugouts. Tanks were developed to break the stalemate of trench warfare, capable of crossing difficult terrain and providing cover for advancing troops. These weapons changed the face of war, making it more deadly and more complex." Provenance: Military historian John Roberts, 2015, report on WWI weaponry.
